Design and Build

Yale did a major design upgrade to the lock with respect to the previous version. You can see how much more modern and minimalist the design is:

The lock comes in three finishes: dark, dark grey, and grey (they have much fancier names for them on the website), and you can customize it to your liking. You can choose either the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth version, keyed or keyless, and with a physical keypad or a touchscreen.

The only configuration we highly recommend is getting the Wi-Fi version. Although it is pricier, you will be able to control the lock from anywhere in the house. Imagine going to bed and realizing you left the door unlocked. With the Wi-Fi version, you will be able to do it from your bed, whereas with Bluetooth, it will depend on how far away you are from the door. You will most likely need to get up and go to the door.

Installation

The installation process is very straightforward. You will first need to download the Yale Home app and scan the QR code that comes with the lock. Once you’ve done that, it launches a very intuitive guide on how to set up the hardware and configure the software. The process shouldn’t take you more than 30-60 minutes. Check out this Youtube video where they do the installation step-by-step.

The lock comes with the 4 AA batteries included, but they are not rechargeable. We recommend getting and extra par of batteries to have ready to go for when the battery drains out.

NOTE: Before you put the batteries in make sure that the lock is unlock.

Is My Door Compatible?

The Yale Assure Lock 2 doesn’t work with mortise-style locks. Moreover, check that you don’t have an interconnected-style lock set because you will have to buy a new handle in order to use a smart lock.

Key Features

  1. Touchscreen Keypad: The Yale Assure Lock 2 comes with the possibility to upgrade from the traditional keypad to a touchscreen keypad, adding a more modern touch to your entryway.
  2. Smart Home Integration: This lock is compatible with major smart home platforms, including Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant. Moreover, it also integrates with Airbnb, making it a perfect smart lock for Airbnb hosts.
  3. Auto-Locking Feature: For added security, the lock can be programmed to automatically lock after a set period of time. In case you forget to secure your door, you can rest assured that Yale will lock it for you.
  4. Keyless Entry Options: In addition to the touchscreen keypad, the lock offers keyless entry options such as Bluetooth and the Yale Access app. With the app, you can control and monitor the lock from wherever you are to receive notifications and grant access to others.
  5. Share And Schedule Access With Trusteed Guests: You can create as many codes as you want for family, friends, and service people and track it through the app. Moreover, you can set this code so they only work on specific dates and timeframes.

Security

Yale implemented several security measures with this lock. Firstly, the matte number pad is coated to ensure that your fingerprints don’t leave a mark. This prevents potential code detection through fingerprint smudging.

Secondly, you can set up a feature that requires you to press two (or several) random digits before or after entering your code. This feature also helps avoid fingerprint smudging or in case someone is watching you.

Lastly, you can set up customized notifications. This can be for specific users, different times of day, and more. This way, you can be notified if someone is attempting unauthorized access or trying to guess the code.

One thing I’ll is missing is a built-in alarm in case someone tries to force the lock.

Performance

In terms of performance, the lock words flawlessly. If you go for the touchscreen version, you will have to tap the logo first and then enter your code. This may seem intuitive but it isn’t.

The auto-lock and unlock features also work fine. You customize the lock to unlock when your are 15ft, 10ft, or 5ft away and there is not much lag. However, make sure that you have the auto-lock feature on so that your door stays closed.

One negative aspect is battery life. Because the lock connect directly to the wifi it drains the battery life much faster. We estimated that each set of batteries will run you about 3 months of power. The lock comes with a low battery indicator, so you will be notified when it’s time to replace them. We recommend having a spare set of four AA batteries to have ready to go when this occur.

Yale Assure Lock 2 Vs. Touch Vs. Plus: What’s The Difference?

The Yale Assure Lock 2 also has two “better” versions called Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch and Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus. You may wonder what the differences are, so I’ve created this table that summarizes it in broad terms:

Overall, with the plus version you get everything we discussed plus Apple Home Key.
